1887 N370 Long Jack Baseball

8 April 2007

The 1887 N370 Long Jack set is one of the toughest sets of cards to collate from all 1800s tobacco sets.  It was distributed by the Long Jack Cigarette Company of Lynchburg, Virginia.  It depicts 13 cards of players for the early St. Louis Browns of the American Association, and champions of all baseball teams in 1885.  Each card measures 1-1/2" by 2-1/2".  The fronts contain a sepia-toned non-action photograph of the baseball player (in uniform) surrounded by a white border.

1887 Lone Jack Cigarette Baseball Card. The photograph, an enlarged example from the N172 Old Judge series, was pasted onto a piece of fragile paperboard.  Printed in capital letters on the lower boarder of these unnumbered cards are the words, "LONE JACK CIGARETTE CO., LYNCHBURG, VA. U.S.A."  The backs are blank.  The player’s name is a facsimile on the chest of the player.  The words, "LONE JACK CIGARETTES" surround his head.

Included in the N370 baseball card set is just one Hall of Fame player - none other than Charles Comiskey.  Others include two cards of Doc Bushong, and one each of Yank Robinson, Tip O’Neil, Arlie Latham, Nat Hudson, Will Gleason, Hugh Nico, Chris Von Der Ahe, Dave Foutz, Bob Caruthers, and Rudy Kemmier.  The players in this set belong to the 1886 St. Louis Browns starting lineup.  The set also depicts the team’s owner, Chris Von Der Ahe.
